Friday afternoon was quickly approaching and I was excited for the weekend. I was wrapping up a few must do’s when I lost my internet connection. Now, this is not completely unusual, so I quickly reset the router, hoping to wrap things up. After about 10 minutes of still no internet, I became slightly frustrated, and decided to ask our neighbor if they were having internet problems. Of course, theirs was still working smoothly which meant it was not a neighborhood problem but our house problem.

I wanted to end my week with wrapping up all projects and feeling a sense of completion, so I needed the internet to work ASAP. I bit the bullet and decided to call the internet company to inquire why we were not receiving service, a task I dread. After what seemed like forever, it was determined that the router was dead and that the modem was outdated, we needed new equipment. Unfortunately, they would not be able to provide this service until the following Monday, which is not what I wanted to hear.

By the time my husband got home from work, I was still freaking out when he assured me that we could simply purchase our own router and he would have the internet up and going by Saturday afternoon. Then he laughed and shared with me that the problem was with the wireless connection and reminded me that if I would have been thinking clearly, I could have just plugged my computer into the modem…not a perfect solution, but workable.

I shifted gears and got ready for our evening activities and decided that I would finish my work on Sunday afternoon…one of the blessings of being an entrepreneur, I reminded myself. The weekend flew by with wonderful friends and fun. Sunday afternoon came and I reminded myself to finish up Friday’s work so that I could start the week off right. I sat down at my computer, which by the way was working very well with the new router, and I was just finishing up everything when the screen went blank!

My heart stopped, I panicked, my computer was fairly new so I hadn’t backed it up…I was racking my brain trying to think when I last did it. Nothing I did worked. I Googled it and researched it and still nothing. So what did I do? Freaked out! I yelled, “This can’t be happening now, I need my computer!” I was beyond frustrated, I was downright angry!

Now I will be honest with you, this is not how I typically react. I was ready to quit, pull the plug on 3-years’ worth of work…I was having a dooms-day type of reaction. I knew this and I decided that I didn’t care, but I did…I did the best thing possible for me and I went to bed. The funny thing was that all of my anger was directed at me, I have a backup system, and I just didn’t make it a priority to use it.

My appointment with the internet company was that evening and I just happened to know the technician. I explained our internet problems and then shared my computer problems. He inquired who was fixing my laptop and I announce that no one had returned our calls that day! He shared that he was starting his own computer service business on the side and offered to help! What a godsend!

Lessons learned from all this craziness:

  1. Freaking out doesn’t solve anything, but going to bed and waking up with a fresh perceptive can do wonders.
  2. Inspiration works, as long as you remember it when you need it for strength.
  3. They make backup systems for a reason…use them and use them often.
  4. Stop whining about small problems, like the loss of an internet connection. Small problems are simply an inconvenience.
  5. Sometimes the answer to your solution is right in front of you.

When was the last time you backed up your computer?
