Every year at about this time, thousands of people, just like you, make a New Year’s Resolution. A resolution is a commitment to achieve something BIG that has been weighing on their heart and mind. They tell themselves a story of success that this is the time they will lose the weight, return to school, start their own business, get organized, write a book, increase sales or enhance a relationship. Whatever it is, they start the year full of hope, passion and potential. Does that sound like you? Let’s be honest, we’ve ALL had BIG dreams in our lives. It doesn’t matter what the dream is, we’ve all had them living inside of us, whispering at us to come alive, but this is where our “buts” come in. Even though this dream excites us, gets us smiling and helps us dream even bigger…we let it sit within us. Then life comes into play, we return to our normal lives and schedules and the passion can quickly dwindle for far too many of us. We start to tell ourselves and others that now just isn’t a good time. We tell ourselves that one day when the kids are older, when the debt is lower, when we understand technology better, or when we know the right people, that we will go after our dream. Far too many people have BIG dreams living within them that never see the light of day, because of their “buts.” Did you know that 90% of people fail their New Year’s Resolution?!?!  So how do you move from dreaming about your vision into making it a reality? When I am coaching a client, we typically start with what they want the outcome to look like. I call this their BIG picture vision. Weather it is a goal they are working towards or life in general, you first have to be able to picture what success looks and feels like. After you have created you BIG picture of what you what success to look like, you have to create your WHY statement. Your WHY statement needs to be the deep down reason, not the practical reason, why you want to find success. Let me give you an example. We went to Jamaica some years ago and I was determined to lose weight before our vacation. I hired a trainer, worked out hard, and I was happy with my results! I even made it to the gym a few times on vacation! Once back in Iowa and enjoying the freezing cold temperatures of winter, I discovered that I had lost my motivation to exercise!  In other words, my initial WHY was a practical why and a practical why works only for short term goals.  Although I had lost the weight for Jamaica, I had really wanted to keep it off. I had to dig deeper and find a WHY that was connected to me emotionally. I have that WHY now in my life and I’m back to exercising. In fact, I exercise six times a week and I will be honest with you, I typically don’t like exercising, especially in the winter on my treadmill.  I start to tell myself stories each day of why I don’t need to exercise or why I should take a short cut, but then a little voice whispers…”Remember your WHY Carrie!” So I exercise without cutting corners and although I don’t like it when I get started, I love how it makes me feel when I have accomplished my goal. Your “buts” are all of your excuses and until you acknowledge them, they will hold you back. You will remain stuck. Remember when I said that 90% of people fail at their New Year’s Resolution? That means 10% of people find success! What are these 10% doing differently? Honestly, they have decided to not let the “buts” win. They have kicked out all of their excuses! They are willing to conquer any obstacles that get in their way, and they are telling themselves stories of success. They simply believe they will succeed. Isn’t it time YOU kicked your “buts” out the window and started living the life you dream of living?
