Did you know that year after year weight loss is the number one New Year’s Resolution? Year after year people commit to weight loss, and unfortunately, for all too many they fail and worse yet, they fail by the third week of January. If you look at your calendar, that would be this week! Weight loss is something most of us can identify with and have struggled with at some point in our lives.  The frustration of starting a diet or exercise plan only to quit within two weeks is the norm. We blame the diet, our schedules, our bodies, etc… We focus so much of our attention on the outside “physical things” and forget to look inward for our own solutions.  Weight loss is a mind game whether you have to lose 20lbs or 120lbs! The first thing you need to do is throw out the word diet! The word diet suggests that your plan is short term.  If I do this diet for six months and exercise three times a week, all will be grand.  Let’s face it, that’s a lie!  If you want to have results that last, you must work for it…EVERY DAY.  Yes, you will have days that you lose the mind game and blow exercise off or eat too much…everyone does!  Identify when that happens, own it, and move on.  Maintaining your weight is a life style plan and the only time it ends is when you decide to quit the game or your time is up on this planet!  The choice is ALWAYS yours…to play or not.  What do you pick? The number one secret to accomplishing any GOAL is that you must first know WHY you want to accomplish the goal. This is not different in weight loss. You must first figure out the real deep seated reason WHY you want to lose the weight…not the surface reason.  So you might be asking, “What’s the difference”?  A surface WHY is usually tied to an event.  You know what I mean, the class reunion is in six months and you are starting to panic and swear that you will do whatever is possible to lose weight, or how about the beach vacation that you are going on.  Anytime a swimsuit is involved, it is typically a HUGE motivator for most of us. How about the wedding coming up or just a big event.  We focus and lose the weight, maybe not all the weight, but we feel good.  But what happens after the “event”? We have lost our WHY and our why is our motivation to do what we need to do, to continue losing weight, or just maintaining our new weight.  The motivation is gone and we slowly return to old behaviors which mean the return of the extra weight.  Isn’t it time that YOU start winning this mind game?
